The game in its current form is said to originate from the entrepreneur Egmund Franzén from the village of Kubbe near Bredbyn in northern Ångermanland. To embellish the dreary free time of the workers, the manufacturer came up with the idea of "throwing wooden blocks". When the game became more widespread, it was named Kubb after the location.
